Yes, we’ve all heard the dispiriting news that the world is going digital and soon, paper and pen will go the way of the stone tablet and the chisel. But we’re not quite there yet. And, in the meantime, there are still some of us who crave our rag papers, who swoon for engraved note cards with matched, lined envelopes and who would gladly swap a week’s salary for a heirloom-quality fountain pen. For those discerning few, Lion in the Sun, Park Slope’s premier paperie, should be a local mecca.

Owner Melinda Morris says that she opened the store (sibling to the 30 year old establishment of the same name run by her parents in Huntington, L.I.) because she wanted to work that revolved around happy occasions, and indeed the bulk of the biz is custom printed invitations for weddings, parties, bar and bat mitzvahs and the like.

But while both service and selection are exemplary in this department, the store also offers a wide array of high quality writing papers, writing implements, cards, journals and gift wrap, many culled from the collections of locally owned and run companies. And if you think paper is not eco-friendly, think again, because Lion in the Sun has a special affinity for companies that use cotton or recycled papers or offer soy ink, such as Cranes, Julie Holcomb, Marsupial, Oblations, Real Card Studio, Seraph, Wiley Valentine and Vismara.

Lion in the Sun’s newest venture is its exclusive line of locally designed wedding invitations, PostScript Brooklyn. Featuring the work of local designers and artists, the collection is by turns whimsical, witty, stylish and elegant. Brides-to-be: take note!
