What: Abraço (Portugese for “hug”) is the kind of coffee bar every neighborhood aspires to have. Not only because the owners, Jamie McCormick and Elizabeth Quijada, greet locals by name, but more importantly because this standing-room-only coffee counter has the best espresso and Mediterranean snacks this side of the Bowery. Serving Counter Culture Coffee, which sources the choicest fair trade beans from around the world, Abraço has become a destination for East Villagers, as well as international visitors in search of a jolt. What you’ll find: Powerful espresso, creamy cappuccino, slow-filter brews, and delicious cured-olive shortbread – just sweet enough to complement the brews. Lunch is always a surprise, as the small plates are prepared daily from whatever Jamie finds in the farmer’s market. Seventies jazz on vinyl completes the vibe. What you won’t find: Wi-Fi, tables, or indoor seating. Everyone gathers on the bench outside (even in the rain). Final Word: Strong coffee, strong following, strong recommendation.
